I have throat congestion that hurts when i cough or sneeze? - throat congestion

This is the second day of my cold, sneezing, and now my throat is a little cluttered, but not so bad. Sneezing or coughing and my throat hurts pretty bad makes you want everything has been skinned. How do I get rid of it?
Oh, and not to say gargle with salt water, because I once tried and stopped at will.
